Reaching Submillisecond Accuracy in Stellar Occultations and Artificial Satellite Tracking

چکیده
In recent years there appeared a need for astronomical observations timed with sub-millisecond accuracy. These include e.g. timing stellar occultations by small, sub-km or fast Near Earth Asteroids, but also tracking artificial satellites at Low Orbit using optical sensors. Precise astrometry of fast-moving satellites, and accurate have parallel needs, requiring reliable time source good knowledge camera delays. Thus an external device that would enable equipment testing, to check if they reach the required accuracy in time. We designed, constructed thoroughly tested New EXposure Timing Analyser (NEXTA): GNSS-based precise timer (Global Navigation Satellite System), allowing 0.1 millisecond, which is order magnitude better than previously available tools. The simple strip blinking diodes, be imaged under test compare internal stamp. Our tests spanned range scientific cameras widely used ground-based satellite tracking. results revealed high reliability both NEXTA most cameras, pointed practically all had bias various level. can serve community, being easily reproducible inexpensive components. provide necessary schemes usage instructions.

Probing Planetary Atmospheres with Stellar Occultations
Earth-based stellar occultations probe the temperature, pressure, and numberdensity profiles of planetary atmospheres in the microbar range with a vertical resolution of a few kilometers. Depending on the occultation data available for a given body and other information, the technique also allows determination of local density variations, extinction by aerosols and molecules, rotation period an...
متن کاملGOMOS: Ozone profile measurements by stellar occultations
The Global Ozone Monitoring by Occultation of Stars instrument (GOMOS) will be launched on board ESA’s Envisat satellite in late 2001. GOMOS will measure ozone and trace gases in the atmosphere by detecting the absorption of star light in UV, visible and infrared wavelengths. GOMOS will deliver ozone and other trace gas profiles at altitudes 15-90 km with a good vertical resolution and with a g...
متن کاملProbing the Martian atmosphere with MAVEN/IUVS stellar occultations
The first campaign of stellar occultations with the Imaging Ultraviolet Spectrograph (IUVS) instrument on board of Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN) mission was executed between 24 and 26 March 2015. From this campaign 13 occultations are used to retrieve CO2 and O2 number densities in the altitude range between 100 and 150 km. Observations probe primarily the low-latitude regions ...
متن کامل2D Articulated Body Tracking with Self-occultations Handling
Recently many methods for human articulated body tracking were proposed in the literature. These techniques are often computationally intensive and cannot be used for Human-Computer Interface. We propose in this article a real-time algorithm for upper body tracking with occultation handling. The tracking is based on an articulated body model, also used to automatically initialize the target. Af...
متن کاملPluto’s lower atmosphere structure and methane abundance from high-resolution spectroscopy and stellar occultations
Context. Pluto possesses a thin atmosphere, primarily composed of nitrogen, in which the detection of methane has been reported. Aims. The goal is to constrain essential but so far unknown parameters of Pluto’s atmosphere such as the surface pressure, lower atmosphere thermal stucture, and methane mixing ratio. Methods. We use high-resolution spectroscopic observations of gaseous methane, and a...
